College Newsletter

Introduction

Choosing a college is one of the first big decisions that you will make that will shape your future life.  What characteristics are important to you in a college?  In this project you will put together a newsletter about one college. You are a journalist  for an independent company that produces newsletters that are designed to give high school juniors and seniors an encapsulated view of a college.  Each newsletter is two to three pages long and covers a specific set of information.   You are newly hired, your first project is to design and write one newsletter to add to the company's selection.

Task

Using Microsoft Publisher 2003 create a newsletter about a college of your choice.  Toward a balanced, attractive, and easily read newsletter, you will need to use:

Background/borders
Headlines and Article Titles
Word Art
Clip Art and/or Photos
Text Boxes
Design Elements (fonts, color, shapes, ruled lines, etc.)

The following articles (in separate text boxes) must be included:

Location
Size
Tuition and fees
Admission Requirements
Activities and Sports of Interest
Majors of Interest

Process

  1. Decide which college will be the subject of your newsletter.   Pick a college that you are interested in attending.  If you need ideas go to http://www.collegenet.com/ and use the search option.

  2. Go to the web page of the college and/or use the college's catalogue (our library has some) to locate the information you need.

  3. Decide on a visual theme for your newsletter.  For example you might use a musical theme, thus your borders, ruling lines, and article titles would follow the theme and contain notes or CDs or people dancing .

  4. Write your articles.  Each article should provide information (i.e. The school is located in Newark, Delaware), but should also provide detail about the implications of that information. (i.e. It is a small town, so you won't have to be concerned with crowds, but don't expect a fully developed bus transportation system.  So if you don't have a car . . . ) Articles should be between one and two well developed paragraphs (8 to 10 sentences).

  5. Find pictures and clip art to enhance your articles.  Be sure to save all in your own file folder.

  6. Finish the layout process.  Be sure to include a Headline for the newsletter and titles for each article. Your newsletter should be between two and three pages.

  7. Print your newsletter.
